One of the best known Hungarian wines Bikavér is a blend of at least four different red varieties which together create a wine of complexity and great character. The legend of Bikavér is enhanced by the fact that its place of birth and time and also its winemaking technology are all shrouded in mystery. Eger and Szekszárd have long been competing for the honour of being recognized as the birthplace of Bikavér.
Perhaps there is no other variety posing as much challenge for growers in Szekszárd as kadarka. Why is it still worth the trouble? The answer lies in its playful lightness and aromas of spices and red berries which come together to create a unique style in Szekszárd once experienced never to be forgotten especially when accompanied by the local fish soup.
Kékfrankos is the most widely planted red grape variety in Hungary as well as in Szekszárd where one out of three vines is kékfrankos. There is a good reason for that: this is a variety that does not let you down even in difficult vintages. It is also a variety that lends itself to many different interpretations and provides excellent results as rose, schiller or red on its own or in blends.
The climate of Szekszárd is best suited to the production of red wines so there is much more red grape planted than whites. Besides the mostly light white wines special mention must be made of the rosé and siller wines which are particularly important from the viewpoint of local tourism and gastronomy.
